Kysis Lore Repository
Kysis is a city set on an alternate version of Earth. This alternate earth discovered a unique energy known as "Kyr" in the early 1900's, and it changed the course of human history.A renewable resource that could be harnessed to generate infinite natural, ono-pollutant, electricity turned the world on its head. Kyril, people born with the ability to invoke Kyr and use it, became valuable to the progression of any nation. Wars were fought over the Kyril once a reliable method of harnessing Kyr was developed.Corporations, ever greedy, took advantage of this new phenomena and rapidly changed Research and Development. Ambient power at the fingertips set into motion The Great Cybernetics Revolution, a second Industrial Revolution of an even greater magnitude. The earth itself was explored and tamed, our local space was not enough to conquer and turn into product for these Corporations and thus they began the effort to terraform Mars and Venus, even making the moon a place to generate revenue and profit.You. Whoever you are. Wherever you may be from. You are now part of the legacy of the Script Keepers. The rebel group founded by Edward Blaskin ages ago. For freedom from greed. For the promise of a new dawn. But even those who follow the light of hope disagree how to reach it. Infighting amongst factions stalls progress, making it slow. Despite this those of Section Seven, you and your people, keep the fight going.
A loose timeline of important events follows this text, most, if not all characters, within Kysis are aware of these historical events. The most recent of them, The Blaskin's Riots, occurred more than 150 years ago. The current year is 2257.
In the early 1900’s a curious thing occurred. The interference of radio during World War 1. One confused radio technician investigated the source of the disturbed and came across a cave deep within the Reichsland. Kyr, previously never known to mankind, made itself apparent before him. The mere ability to hear the disturbance itself was a signifier that he could listen and hear the frequency of Kyr that stayed hidden from all technical instruments. In that cave he was opened to the dancing colors and lights of Kyr itself.
More heard the call and found their way to the Kyr Cave, to be awakened to the call. All of them held a specific neuron in their brain that normal humans did not. That neuron allowed them to understand and manipulate Kyr. The first Kyril, or Kyr Mages, were not as well received at the time. Decried as insane and heretical by the faithful of various religions they were ostracized. Tensions rose throughout the early 1900’s as the cold war ended, another war began.
As the cold war was closed out, the USSR broken into the Balkans and other subsidiaries, a new war burst onto the scene. Kyr Mages, Kyril, under the direction of the man they simply knew as The First began to assault various major population centers with prepared magical assaults. Bombs carved into buildings, turning them into death traps. Embassies reduced to ruin, infrastructure destroyed before anyone knew what was happening.
The First had radicalized the otherized Kyril, given them a mission and a dangerous ideology. It was only in the fires of death that the song of Kyr could play he had said, and it was only when mankind had been served its fill of murder would it ever end. Fewer in number than normal humans at first the Kyril had the advantage, using urban hit and run tactics to wage a fifty year long war. During this time assassinations of high level politicians and world leaders was relatively common during this time.
The Mage Wars, as they have been known to be called, came to an end in 2041. With the capture and killing of The First, who had lived over one hundred years without issue, the core pillar of their ideology fell out from under them. Without The First to sustain the hardened radical speech there was none to take his place and the radicalized Kyril were found, captured, and de-radicalized as much as they could.
The construction of what was, at the time, referred to as The Final City due to the work that was going into it and how it would be the final template for all cities going forward, boosted cybernetics into the mainstream. Dangerous was the work to carve the foundations of Megacity Kysis, the first fully Kyr ran city. Prior to the development of Kysis Kyr itself had been highly looked down upon, and technology made in relation to it was considered taboo. That is until Ryan Warner stepped onto the scene.
Cybernetics was his pet project and Asuman Industries, the world leader in biotechnical research as well as Kyr-Tech development, stepped up to fund the base construction of Megacity Kysis under a single condition. The workforce was the Augmented Humans, referred to as Augs, that Ryan had given his prototype cybernetics to. The deal was approved and from the various incidents where loss of life was avoided due to the efforts of Augs and thus did Cybernetics and Kyr become widely accepted by the general populace due to the efforts of Asuman Industries.
With the merging of Mexico, Canada, and The United States, several states, provinces, and territories were re-drawn. The Pacific Northwest was subsumed into a portion of Canada to create the territory of Cascadia. It is within this land that Kysis was built. It is during this time that the megacorp known as Whitelight was built.
Whitelight and Asuman Industries softly warred in Megacity Kysis until the combined forces of India, Russia, and China decided to try and take the valuable Kyr-Tech that the city held, as their spies could do little to pry the secrets from the Kyril within the city. The military assault on Kysis led to the arming of individual citizens, encouragement of military training for every person living in Kysis, and the weaponization of cybernetics, let alone the living weapons that Kyril were turned into.
The War in Cascadia turned out poorly for the invading countries, as they had stoked the ire of a people loyal to a city that had provided for them. The nearly five hundred million residents of Kysis formed a terrifying force and tore through the countryside of China and India, while devastating the capital of Russia.
A Kyr-Tech genius, and responsible for the availability of modern cybernetics through the invention of FICUS, Edward Blaskin was a well known, and beloved, individual. He was a man who saw the failure of the systems around him, however, and he shunned the popularity and gathered liked minded individuals to make protests and demands in government. They were met with stonewalls and subtle attacks. Bank accounts drain. Livelihoods destroyed. Public images shattered… Unfortunately for them, however, Edward had already been building funds and resources in the background.
He pulled together his contemporaries, the most knowledgeable Kyril in several generations, and formed the Script Keepers. The first of the Blaskin’s Riots began as infrastructure was targeted, the Kyril who had built their very foundations using the KyrScript against those that wished to use them for greed and power. On and on the years went, a new Riot every spring and fall, water treatment plants hit, power generation, nutrient farms, nothing was spared. Not until the fabled Section Seven had finally been opened.
Edward let the Script Keepers into Section Seven, closed it off, and proceeded to create a respite all their own. So great was the force that the Script Keepers held that the government did not intervene, only foolish MegaCorps who dared to tame the Section found out what the government already knew. To trespass on the territory of Blaskin was tantamount to foolishness. After his death the yearly riots ended, but Section Seven stayed in the hands of the Script Keepers, now fragmented into various factions. The entire sector is run by an individual who is called Morrigan, or Mora, who many have never seen…
Kyr is an ambient energy that resonates from all stars in the universe. Each star generates a local Kyr Field within their solar system. If stars are close enough to one another they will create a local cluster Kyr Field between them.
Kyr is functionally limitless, however it requires preconditions to be used. Specialized neurons within a create need to exist in order to hear and see Kyr energy, and they must possess the ability to use language in order to funnel Kyr into the proper forms to create magical effects. Magical effects themselves range from fireballs to esoteric sealing to being able to animate technological objects. The limitations of Kyr are fundamentally linked to the ability of a material to resist stress.
The largest magical effects ever seen were when a bundle of telephone pole sized tungsten rods were dropped into the ocean and were set off. The resulting explosion was equal to a Tsar Bomba. Kyr as a weapon of mass destruction, as such, has not been seen as a viable venture.
Typically metal is inscribed with KyrScript in order to create magical effects, as the reaction of magic coming into the world is violent and tends to destroy most other materials.
Those born with what is called the Resonance Neuron are able to see and hear Kyr. This allows them to interface and manipulate Kyr. Magic requires multiple steps, the first being to interact with Kyr and then force it to resonate into a specific frequency. After this the Kyr must be guided into KyrScript to then create a magical effect.
Kyril used to be heavily discriminated against but now find themselves as valued members of society for what they can provide, but it is almost exclusively for what they can provide. Corporations see them as living batteries, slaves to be used to create products, reactors, treatment plants, and whatever else they wish for them to help create.
KyrScript can be thought of, by those without the ability to see Kyr, as circuits of magic, or magic code. Kyr itself is only an energy source and must be guided through channels that transform and modify how its energy is to be used. This language, that essentially programs Kyr, is known as KyrScript. Each KyrScript language allows for the application of millions of different effects to be created by that KyrScript.
KyrScript is broken down into two distinct applications. Each general manipulation of reality, such as kinetic manipulation, electricity, fire, water, force, etc, is known as a full “KyrScript”. In this context they are known as KyrScript Languages. Each KyrScript itself is a language that can be applied in various different ways, or sentences, to create effects. Individual effects of KyrScript are typically referred to simply as “Scripts”.
Masters of a KyrScript are able to execute various functionalities, bending rules and understood truisms about that KyrScript in particular.
The understood requirements for writing KyrScript is as follows; KyrScript requires a durable material to be engraved upon and thus is typically written exclusively on concrete or other durable stonework, or a metal alloy. The typical metal alloy is the same alloy used for cybernetics. Thinner material has less durability by nature and thus cannot support complex KyrScript. The more a Script “does” to change reality the more complex the Script itself becomes and in doing so requires a more durable material to be engraved upon.
The largest known examples of KyrScript energy output are both the aforementioned tungsten rods and the KyrReactors in Kysis, that are entire city blocks wide and their interiors are mazes of nearly unusable space dedicated to maximizing surface area and material durability to withstand the almost eldritch power coursing through the Script inside. The smallest known example of KyrScript is metal chokers. Earrings and Rings, and things of such sizes, are not dense, durable, or thick enough to support any KyrScript engravings.
There are lost and secret arts to KyrScript as well. To the current knowledge of those within Kysis the following types of KyrScript are considered “lost script” and unable to be recreated, unless one finds an ancient source;
Sealing Script: The ability to store and retrieve things from physical objects to more conceptual things such as emotion. Pocket dimensions fall under this script.
Technomancy: The ability to manipulate technology.
There are some KyrScript that are considered impossible due to materials deficiencies.
-Teleportation
-Time Travel
-Resurrection
-Mind Control
-Black Holes
-Star Generation
-Fundamental Particle Control
-Quantum Manipulation
All technology is typically referred to as KyrTech, including Cybernetics. KyrTech is revolutionary in its process. Using specialized KyrScript to pull ambient Kyr and convert it into electricity almost all need for batteries or power storage has been eradicated, other than the industrial batteries used to store excess KyrReactor energy. Cybernetics are only made possible through KyrTech as well.
Climate Crisis is a thing of the past, except for the unfortunate loss of Florida. Every resident of Kysis is outfitted with a FICUS(Fully Integrated Control and Use System) to allow them interfacing with essential systems of daily life within the city. The FICUS is a spinal implant that provides extra data to the nervous system and is the basis for all augmentations and full body replacements. The FICUS system is the only augmentation that a Kyril can use, as anything more than that interferes with their ability to harmonize Kyr and guide it into KyrScript.
Asuman Industries
Founded by Ryan Werner and skyrocketing to popularity after the initial wave of positive PR done in regards to the Megacity Kysis. Asuman Industries invested heavily into Kyr research and development as well as biotech in the early 2000's. With the foundational technology put in place, and with the help of a strong PR push, Ryan effectively made Kyril accepted as peers and cybernetics a full mainstream adopted idea.Gone were the days of having to yearn for the way ones body could look, with Cybernetics it could simply be built the way one desired. For a cost. After Developing the FICUS system and making it, essentially, publicly adopted technology Asuman spread its fingers to every nook and cranny of production. A powerhouse of weapons and defense production now, as well as durable civilian products, Asuman either directly or indirectly has a grip on nearly every market in Kysis.
Whitelight
Asuman Industries built itself off the back of it's biotech research. However one employee felt that Ryan had turned away from Biotech and focused entirely on physical production. This led to a rift that eventually resulted in rival Megacorp Whitelight coming about.Pharmaceuticals. Biotechnology. Advanced Agricultural Technology. Anything to do with modifying genetics or influencing bio-organics Whitelight has its hands in. On one hand they've created cures to the common cold, and on the other they've created an incurable common cold that they then released on the world in order to further force the populace to buy their cure.
Kokuryuu
Originally a small time firm that referred to itself as the Seiryuu, the Kokuyruu Corporation was created as a merger between the four biggest logistics providers on the North American continent. Their names have been lost to time and intentional obscure of records. However the names of each of the four founders remains.Vicario. Oza. Nazarova. Caji. The final founder of the Kokuyruu has never been seen except by each of the four appointed board members, they simply refer to this individual as The Patriarch. Rumor has it that the companies all came from less than scrupulous origins and still hold them to this day.
The City of Kysis, while it does have a distinct culture overall, is chunked up into seven districts that have their own microcultures. Each “sector” of the city is large enough to be its own distinct city by itself. The Sprawl of Kysis is home to some 500+ million individuals. At least that was according to the census done fifty years ago.
The city center from which all information, wealth, and ideas spread. Every corporation, small and mega, holds an office here. Sprawling governmental buildings as well as infrastructure critical facilities all reside here. The second most green filled district in the city.
The wealthiest sector by far, and the oldest. This sector is only readily accessible through the city center, or by aerial transportation. The best schools, hospitals, jobs, everything here is gilded in luxury and wealth. The grass *is* greener on the other side here and most of the CEO’s and people responsible for policy in Kysis reside here. Refinement and nobility exudes from every citizen that calls Armitage home.
People aren’t sure if there’s a “street level” to The Well. A massive sprawl that is made of buildings on buildings on buildings. Falling into one of its great chasms will see you never hitting the bottom, only a jutting piece of architecture that happened to be in the way. The industrial heart of Kysis, with several multi-building sized Kyr-Reactors serving as the beating heart of the city itself, most people who work in The Well live in The Well. A more rough and tumble people, hardened and cut to shape by the dangers of industrial labor that still needs to be done despite advancements in technology.
Named originally for the vast array of different tilia trees that were so reminiscent of the asiatic sphere of the world, this sector has a starkly different feel to it than anywhere else. Old chinese, indian, japanese, and korean architectural structures riddle the massive sector in conjunction with the neon lights and towering buildings. Recently there’s been a sector of Tilia carved out and changed a bit, creating a small latin pocket within the asiatic sector. People who call Tilia home tend to be grounded in family and connections to others with an importance placed on tradition.
A massive silver vein was discovered during the planning stages of Kysis under where this sector had been planned to be built in addition to the vale that had prior been there before being demolished. Silvervale sees the most stable of incomes, of education, of life paths. Most people who can move to Silvervale from other sectors tend to when they are establishing a family. The space here is not as oppressive or overwhelming as in other sectors of Kysis. People from Silvervale tend to be more adaptable and are inclined towards compromise.
Slums. Shithole. Ghetto. Many words, all the same thing. The dumping pits for the materials that were dug out and deemed useless for the creation of Kysis, even its people. Those who have fallen into drugs, murder, criminality, end up here. A thieving, cheating, stabbing, place in Kysis for which nobody who is there is there because they want to be. People from Recktor tend to be individualistic and prioritize survival.
The last sector that was built, and the first one that was overtaken by those in opposition to the Mega Corps that rule Kysis with an iron fist. Technically Section Seven is overseen by a coalition group that encompasses the leaders of the five factions, however in truth it is subdivided into different cultures and clans. While not a lawless zone it is without question a dangerous one. To be without a faction is to be without a patron, and to be without a patron is to be a free agent. It is here we find ourselves, in Section Seven. Offered a choice of faction to join, group to partner up with, or even to start our own path. No matter the frictions and the differences in Section Seven everyone that lives there and calls it home knows the grand goal. Tear down the ivory towers looking down and build a better world.
The available major factions of Kysis that individual players need to choose to belong to. They can either go solo, start their own, or join a patron. To wander Section Seven without a patron is the same as leaving your car unlocked and running. You can do it, but if someone steals it you can’t complain. The Major Factions combined lead the Council. The Council is responsible for gathering resources and setting Calls to Action to people within Section Seven to rise up and execute plans based on the consensus of the Council. The Main Plotline of Kysis will be executed through The Council. The Council is directed and led by an entity named Morrigan, or Morri to those that are familiar with them. People have suspicions of what they are, but nobody has either confirmed it or confronted them about it based on the nature of them being Edward Blaskin’s legacy. The original rebel group was known as Script Keepers, due to Blaskin’s work at the time and his focus. People of Section Seven tend to either be referred to as “Scrippies” for a derogatory term, and “Sevs” as the more polite term due to this.As a player character you can start your own faction, gang, group, or join one of the pre-established factions.
“Be like Water”
La Gota was one of the three first factions to form from the separation of Script Keepers after Edward Blaskin’s death. La Gota adapts like water, believing that they must work inside the system and influence the flow of it in order to achieve freedom from the clutches of the Mega Corps. They tend to argue for more level headed responses, public facing outreach, and are generally friendly as a broad spectrum general rule.
“Peace in Silence”
Cu Sith was one of the three first factions that arose after the death of Edward Blaskin. Their founder modeled themselves after Edward’s tendency towards pragmatism. Cold and heartless, calculating. The Cu Sith are always the first to offer the quickest, often most lethal, and least risk taking plans or ideas to others. Having a Cu Sith as a friend means you might show up to your apartment with them already in it, a clue in that they want to hang out.
“Sin is a Weapon”
Alicanto is the remnants of the group of the same name that was formed after the death of Edward Blaskin. It, however, split into the modern day Alicanto, Akabeko, and Fuka Kaminari. The Alicanto believe that the key to solving their problems is money. An idea held by most members is essentially to use money to destroy money. The tools of the enemy must be used against them, fire with fire. This has led them to enter friction more often than other groups. An Alicanto, as a general rule, tends to be wise with resources and focused more on the hows rather than the whys.
"The Weak Shall Prosper"
Named after the strength of a stubborn cow the Akabeko disagreed heavily with the way the Alicanto wished to run things, focusing more on strength of arms and discipline within their members. The Akabeko fall into two camps, former military or former doctors of some vein. They tend to be loud, open, and uplifting. An Akabeko friend is one who will break into your house and cook you a meal before you get home, even if you told them to stop the last four times they did it.
“Destruction Begets Creation”
Brutal and vicious. Funka Kaminari was founded on those twin ideas. In order for change to occur pain must be inflicted. Demolitionists, arsonists, and those that are sick of seeing the world the way it is. Typically referred to as Fu-Ka, they push for the most visible, and destructive, action. Their guiding principles being rebirth through destruction. Members of Fu-Ka tend to be brash, aggressive, and short sighted, but their hearts are in the right place.
Information that has not been sorted into a proper location but needs to be known will be listed here.
Guns cannot be made trivalized in general. KyrScript is powerful, but 45ACP hitting a person is still going to hurt and do damage. Please self police to ensure that there is not a "power" arms race. Guns will remain a dangerous tool.
Kyril cannot self augment, the human flesh is too weak to handle the magical circuit of KyrScript.
Cybernetics can allow people to increase their durability, allowing them to handle KyrScript on those parts sometimes, as well as potential take a few gunshots. Be sensible with this.
If disease is spotted soon enough most illnesses can be cured, even various cancers. Treatment is normally less costly than cybernetics if caught very early. Normally.
Healthcare is "optional". Typically people that wish to stay with their biological body will tend to lean towards healthcare and curing disease, while those who don't want to deal with corporations or lengthy treatment procedures, or are just poor, will turn to cyberware as a secondary source of healthcare.
All cybernetics use the same metal alloy for their construction.
Writing KyrScript is always a subtractive process. It must always take away from the material rather than add to it.
